Artist/Maker
Place of origin

E. H. Sothern (1859–1933) wore this pair of gloves as part of his costume when playing the title role in Hamlet by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). The production dates from 1907 during Sothern’s acting partnership with Julia Marlowe (1865–1950), when they were celebrated on the American stage as the pre-eminent Shakespearean actors. Although they appeared for a season in London, they were unable to attract the same following as they had in the U.S.A.
