Comelli (1858-1925) was the house designer of the Royal Opera House from the late 1880s to the early 1920s. During this period he also worked for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and Daly's Theatre and also designed costumes from a number of Gilbert&Sullivan productions.

Physical description

Costume design for Alec Fraser as Victorian in Act I of Cleopatra at Daly's Theatre. The design shows a full length image of Fraser in a military uniform with ancient Egyptian characteristics. Fraser is dressed in an avocado green mid thigh length tunic embellished with gold, red and blue under a dark green, gold and jewel encrusted muscle plate or cuirass. He wears a terracotta red cloak fastened at the shoulders by two large turquoise broaches. On his feet he wears gold and black strapped sandals and on his head he wears a gold helmet with turquoise detailing in the style of an ancient Egyptian military helmet.
