Copy of a dyeline showing a side elevation of the ship and rigging that featured in the debut production of Mutiny at the Piccadilly Theatre, London in 1985. This is one of a set of copies of technical drawings created by the designer William Dudley that were given to the collection.
The West End Musical Mutiny was based on the novel Mutiny on the Bounty by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall. Directed by Michael Bogdanov it opened at the Piccadilly Theatre, London in July 1985 and run for over 500 performances. The music was composed by David Essex (who also performed the role of Fletcher Christian).
William Dudley, (b. 4th March 1947) is a British theatre designer, he studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Slade School of Art and designed his first production (Hamlet for Nottingham Playhouse) in October 1970. Since then he has designed productions for a wide range of theatres, not just within Britain but across the world, including the Royal Court Theatre, The National Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Theatre and The Metropolitan Opera House. The designs he created for Mutiny were used for the original 1985 production.
