  • EVENING ENSEMBLE SKIRT Machine knitted nylon monofilament and ikat (tie-dyed) silk, decorated with sequins and snippets of fancy ribbons and braids VEST Machine-knitted cotton and ikat silk British: Susie Freeman, 1984 The fullness of this ankle-length skirt, gathered into a wide elasticated waistband, is achieved by underlayers of taffeta and nylon net. The glittering decorations are enmeshed in a double-layer knitted fabric of fine nylon thread, which is surprisingly soft to the touch. The co-ordinating sleeveless top is cut in one piece from knitted fabric placed horizontally. It is seamed at the centre back and across the shoulders. Susie Freeman makes knitted hangings and a range of costume accessories as well as exotic one-off outfits. Her imaginative use of knitted structure is far removed from traditional image of knitting.
