Labels and date

It is thought that 'Favrile' glass was so-named after the word 'fabrile', 'old English' for 'handmade', indicating that the range was made by skilled craftsmen. The lustre effect was achieved by treating the glass with metallic oxides and exposing it to acid fumes. It was originally intended to re-create the iridescent effects seen on ancient Roman glass.

This vase and the accompanying perfume sprinkler were both bought
from Tiffany's shop at 221 Regent Street, London. The success of the highly
commercial Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company resulted from Tiffany's
combination of aesthetic judgement, mastery of craft processes and well-
developed entrepreneurial skill. His work covered painting, jewellery,
architecture, interior decoration and most forms of furnishing, both secular
and ecclesiastical. The combination was irresistible and Tiffany's reputation
in America from about 1880 was unique.
