Button
1810 - 1820s (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Engraved button of a stage coach drawn by four galloping horses with a house, trees and fields in the background and a milestone in the foreground. Nine men in top hats and great coats are portrayed sitting on top of the coach.
The button is also interesting because it is so large, measuring about 7.3cms in diameter. Due to its size it is probably too big to have been worn on actual clothing. It may therefore have been a sample of fine craftsmanship to be displayed as an exhibition piece or in a shop window to advertise goods.
