This scarf was created by Shetlands from Shetland, a company founded by Margaret Stuart in the Shetland Islands in 1969. The company produced mainly handknitted Shetland garments. Knitted in Shetland jumper wool from Jamieson and Smith, the Shetland wool brokers. The scarf is in a pattern known as 'new shell' in Shetland lore. It was purchased from the Scottish Merchant in Covent Garden, London. The scarf was purchased and later donated to the Museum along with a matching hat. The company produced a large collection of knitted rainbow coloured garments including Shetland shawls. A number of the knitwear pieces were notably worn by the presenters on the children's Thames television programme 'Rainbow'.
