Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Chun Liao's work often takes the form of installations composed of miniature pots, sometimes in large numbers. These tiny pots provoke curiosity, invite close inspection and encourage treatment with gentleness and care. They also hint at something remembered, perhaps triggering memories of childhood. The expressionistic detailing of the pots lends each its own character. Grouped together, their individuality becomes strongly apparent.

Brief description
Installation of 154 miniature pots, porcelain with coloured glazes, by Chun Liao, London, 2008
Physical description
Installation of 154 predominantly miniature porcelain pots arranged to form a wide, shallow group, the precise arrangement of which has been determined by the artist. All but three of the pots are flat-bottomed, straight-sided cylinders, tapering towards an uneven rim. The remaining three pots are rounded bowl forms. Each pot is thrown, and glazed in a single colour: black, yellow, blue, orange, or green; or is decorated with a clear glaze in combination with a green line formed from fired copper wire. A number of the pots also have tiny beads of gold held in a tiny channel on their rim.
Dimensions
  • Width: 205cm (approximate width of installation)
  • Depth: 30cm (approximate depth of installation)
