ANIMA - Emalia

Brooch
2009 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The Dutch jeweller Ruudt Peters (born 1950) has long been a notable figure in experimental contemporary jewellery. His fertile imagination has explored a fascinating diversity of styles using a wide array of materials for jewellery in its own right and jewellery as part of installation art. His influence has also been felt as a teacher - at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam and the Konstfack University of Arts and Crafts, Stockholm.

This brooch is from a series titled 'ANIMA', in which Peters focuses on female elements within the male subconscious. The intangible is captured through the free and expressive swirls and knots of molten wax cooling and setting in moving water. As Peters explains: 'It is movement solidifying what arises from the unconscious. A fluid line is caught in coagulated form'. The process can only be directed to a limited degree, and it can be seen as a three-dimensional development of his recent experimentation with 'drawing blind, in order to achieve more freedom in my thinking'.
