Winston Collection

Architectural Drawing
early 19th century (drawn)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Cut out image drawn in pen and ink with coloured washes which merges main tiers with 1814 proscenium boxes creating new boxes over proscenium door of Wyatt's Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Light pencil annotations have been used to indicate additional partitions in the topmost tier.

These sketches are from the Winston Collection, and are likely to date from circa 1814 as the coloured washes reflect the 1814 colour scheme (the front gold on blue ground, with pink interiors).

Although Mr. Samuel Beazley Jr. was the architect for the proposed alterations to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the 1820's, this collection indicates that Mr James Winston (born c.1773) played an active role in the proposal alterations. It is however unclear if he actually drew the plans himself or copied from original ones and added some notes. Appointed as Acting Manager of Drury Lane in 1819 Winston continued to be involved with the theatre until c.1827 and kept unpublished diaries of his time there.
