Pendant
1800-1870 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Pendants were worn by women throughout Switzerland. Many were worn round the neck, but it is more likely that this one was hung from a collar or apron chain, as it is smaller and lighter than most traditional neck pendants.
The most characteristic element of Swiss traditional jewellery is the lavish use of chains and filigree. The filigree was often further embellished with coloured stones and enamel. Shallow faceted black stones, like those on this pendant, are very common in Swiss traditional jewellery, and rarely found elsewhere. They are often described as jet, but they are almost always made of very dark red glass, as here.
