1736-1795 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The technique used in the manufacture of this vase is known as 'layer cut glass’. One layer of glass, usually of a different colour, is cast on top of another. Then part of the top layer is cut away to form decorative patterns as well as to reveal the layer beneath. In this case the design consists of a lobster, a lotus flower and other shellfish. Layer cut glass was a speciality of Chinese glass makers and the tradition has continued into modern times.
