Official Riding a Horse

Ridge Tile
1500-1650 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Shanxi province was the major centre for tile production during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Curved tiles such as this one were fitted along the roof ridge and at the sloping eaves of a building and they are often decorated with three-dimensional figures of gods or animals. The man riding a horse shown here wears a civil official's robe and a black gauze hat. He would have had a companion tile showing a man wearing a military official's clothes.
