Vase

18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This vase was one of the V&A's early purchases of Chinese art, entering the Museum in 1853. Not only is it beautifully potted but the decoration of floral design is done in the 'doucai' style. This involved drawing the outline first in blue and then painstakingly filling the space within the outline with coloured enamels. The Museum paid a modest sum for this piece, which indicates that high-quality Chinese porcelains were readily available at that time.
