Adapted from Charles Dickens’s novel A Tale of Two Cities, The Only Way was a star vehicle for actor-manager John Martin Harvey (1863-1944) as the self-sacrificing hero, Sidney Carton. The poster is for the first production in 1899: the role of Carton stayed in Martin Harvey’s repertoire until 1939. He claimed to have played the part more than 5000 times.
