Object history
Associated Production: J. B. Howe, Babil and Bijou. Actor: J.B. Howe. Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, Bow Street, London. 29.8.1872 (Babil and Bijou). Performance category: drama, solo performance. According to a pencilled note on the back of the poster the cast was altered from that announced on this poster. J. Burdett Howe (1828-1908) was an actor-manager whose real name was Thomas Burdett. The wording on the poster reads 'Tragedian and Character Artiste. J.B.Howe. Covent Garden Theatre' although some letters have been lost with the paper loss in the top left-hand corner. A note on the back of the poster gives the date and theatre as Covent Garden 29 August 1872. That night Babil and Bijou opened at Covent Garden. J.B.Howe appeared in that as Skepsis, King of the Gnomes, but this poster appears to be more definitely for a solo appearance by Howe at Covent Garden.
