Jan Wege, born in Hamburg in 1964, initially trained as a dental technician. In 1987, he became apprenticed to the silversmith, Thomas Schleede. From 1990 until 1996, he studied at the Academy of Art, Nuremberg, under Professors Erhard Hossle and Ulla Meyer. Awarded the title of Master Silversmith in 1994, he established his own studio in Hamburg in 1996.

He has exhibited widely in Germany and abroad and has been awarded numerous prizes and bursaries, the most recent being the Justus Brinckmann Prize for Art and Design, Hamburg, 2009. He is already represented in the collections of the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg and is recognized as one of the most innovative and accomplished silversmiths practising in Germany today.
