These earrings were described as 17th century Sicilian when they were acquired by the Museum in 1910, probably on account of their painted enamel and profuse use of pearls which are typical of Sicilian gold jewellery of that period. They are more likely to come from the area around Venice and the eastern coasts of the Adriatic, where earrings such as these were part of the traditional costume up to the early 20th century.

Brief description
Pair of enamelled gold earrings with applied filigree decoration and pearl pendants, Venice (Italy), 1750-1850.
Physical description
Pair of gold enamelled earrings with pearl drops. Each earring is made from thin sheet gold over a silver core, pierced in an arabesque pattern and decorated with applied wire and blue and white enamel on the front. In the centre is a pear-shaped space, with a pendent pearl in the centre, and there are three more pearl pendants hanging from the base. There is a long straight wire attached to the top at the back.
