Stiff Records "Air From Akron" aerosol

Aerosol
late 1970s (production)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This aerosol is a promotional item sent out by the independent record label Stiff Records, to promote the signing of several bands from the Akron, Ohio, new wave and post punk scene. Bands signed from the Akron scene included Devo and The Waitresses, as well as other more locally known performers. Stiff Records released a compilation album of the artists featured on this aerosol, which was housed in a "scratch 'n' sniff" cover. When scratched, the cover released the scent of rubber, associated with the town because of its industrial, car manufacturing basis. It was this industrial background that inspired the creativity of the music scene in Akron in such a furtive way, making it a post-punk musical wellspring.
