CALLIGRAPHIC PAGE FROM A ROYAL ALBUM Opaque watercolour and gold on paper Calligraphy probably Iran, illumination and borders Mughal Calligraphy 16th century, illumination c. 1610-20, borders c. 1650 IM.15a-1925 Each folio of albums assembled for Shah Jahan usually had a painting on one side and an example of fine calligraphy on the other, both framed by flower-filled borders. Here, single lines of Arabic precede and follow four lines of Persian verse. The golden ground, filled with delicate blossoms, animals and birds, and stylised clouds in the sky, were added during the reign of Jahangir by a master artist(01/08/2017)
