The inventive woodcut image on this Birmingham Theatre Royal poster enticed audiences to a Benefit evening, for which the clown Charles Paulo and the dancer Mlle. Nellie received a percentage of the profits. The pantomime Dick Whittington, running from December until April was the first pantomime appearance of the music hall star George Chirgwin (1854-1922). As Idle Jack, his character’s poverty conveniently forced him to take up minstrelsy and perform his popular act.

Nellie at the Theatre Royal, Birmingham, dated Monday, 28 March, with lettering in red and black ink, The capital letters of the name 'Paulo' are shown as if in three dimensions against a red background, with the head of a whiteface clown looking through the letter U and smaller figures of clowns and circus artistes performing acrobatics around the letters.

The inventive woodcut on the poster features figures tumbling around the name of the clown Charles Paulo (although in this performance of Dick Whittington, the clown was played by George Chirgwin, who went on to become a star of music hall). The evening was a benefit for Paulo and ballet mistress Mlle Nellie, meaning that they received a welcome percentage of the profits.(16/08/2016)
