Playbill advertising 'The Celebrated Theatrical Child' at Upton's Assembly Rooms, London, on 24th March 1801, published by J. Nichols.
The text reads: The SECOND and LAST NIGHT. At Upton's Assembly Rooms, no. 8, Store-Street, Tottenham-Court-Road, On Tuesday, the 24th of March, 1801, the Celebrated THEATRICAL CHILD, only Eleven Years Old, (Whose astonishing Powers excited all Ranks of People) Will deliver his Dramatic Selections from the most favorite Scenes in the Plays of Richard the Third, Hamlet, Pizarro, Speed the Plough, &c. &c. &c. After the Manner of the celebrated MONSIEUR TESSIER, for the Benefit of his WIDOWED MOTHER. Admittance One Shilling. Doors to be opened at Six, and to begin at Seven o'Clock precisely. Tickets to be had at Mrs. Burn's Stationer, no. 54, Tottenham-Court-Road; and at no.8, Store-Street, Bedford-Square.
The Celebrated Child was Edmund Carey, who grew up to become the famous 19th century actor Edmund Kean (1787-1833). The Theatre and Performance Department in the V&A also holds a copy of the playbill advertising his first appearance at Store Street on 17th March 1801.
