Large colour lithograph poster depicting the ballerina Anna Pavlova (1882-1931). She is shown en pointe, balanced on her right foot, facing left, her hands in the air. Across the top of the poster is a banner reading 'THEATRE DU CHATELET, SAISON RUSSE OPERA ET BALLET, MAI JUIN 1909'.
Pavola appears to be wearing the costume associated with the ballet Les Sylphides which became a famous part of the repertoire of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes Company. This original version of this Les Sylphides was a ballet in one act with choreography by Michel Fokine (1880-1942) and music by Chopin (1810-1849) and was premiered on the 23rd of February 1907 at the Maryinsky Theatre, St Petersburg. Diaghilev created this 1909 version for Paris, adding additional dance pieces and commissioning new designs from Alexandre Benois (1870-1960). It was premiered on the 2nd of June 1909 by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes at Théâtre du Chatelet with Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina (1885-1978) and Vaslav Nijinsky (1890-1950) in the principal roles.
