A Science and Art Department Board minute précis dated 25th April 1863 indicates that Owen Jones was to be asked to suggest decoration designs for the Oriental Courts. Some of Jones' resultant designs, including this one, bear a Science and Art Department stamp mark dated 7th May 1863.
