Design for decoration of the Oriental Court

Design
1863 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Drawing with pencil, wash, body colour, gold paint, and pen and ink on paper. This coloured design for the Oriental Court (now Rooms 34-6) shows an ornate decorative scheme for a coffered ceiling. The main field of the central ceiling bay in the drawing is shown to contain a regular, repeating pattern of three distinct ornamental motifs interspersed on a preparatory grid drawn in pencil. A decorative rectangular border encloses the main field. Neighbouring ceiling bays are suggested. Areas of pink-tinged wash indicate the surrounding architectural structure of pillars and a wall. Crease across width of paper towards one end.
