Place of origin |
Drawing with pencil, wash, body colour, gold paint, and pen and ink on paper. This coloured design for the Oriental Court (now Rooms 34-6) shows a highly ornate decorative scheme for a coffered ceiling. The main field of the central ceiling bay in the drawing is shown to contain a cartouche design with an elaborate scalloped lozenge at its heart, all of which is enclosed within a richly decorated rectangular border. Arabesques and floral motifs abound throughout. There are suggestions that the general decorative format be repeated in neighbouring ceiling bays. Areas of pink-tinged wash indicate the surrounding architectural structure of pillars and a wall. Crease across width of paper towards one end.
