Carpet
1825-1875 (made)
Place of origin |
Warp: white cotton; Z6S; 24-26 threads per inch (100 per dm), depressed.
Weft: blue cotton; Z3S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 15 knots per inch (60 per dm)
Pile: wool; 10 colours: dark red, red, orange, yellow, dark green, dark blue, blue, light blue, purple, white; asymmetrical knot open to the left and tied around 2 threads (there are also some symmetrical knots - for example, in the red and yellow outer guard stripe in the lower right hand side); 180-195 knots per sq. inch (3000 per sq. dm). It is difficult to see the colours on the asymmetrical knots because they are around the depressed warp threads.
Side Finish: one cord oversewn with red wool.
End finish: Lower: incomplete but 2.5 cm. of weft-faced plain weave with blue cotton. There are the partial remains of a cord twined through the warp loops. Upper: cut.
Design: Field: dark blue ground with six and a half botehs across the width. The botehs all contain a red floral sprig and each row faces in the alternate direction, having either dark green or blue leaves.
Main border: white ground with red and purple blossoms on a dark blue meandering stem (dark green at the top).
Inner and outer borders: dark blue ground with floral meander.
Innnermost and outermost borders: reciprocal diamond heads in dark blue and blue outlined in red.
