This necklace was made by Giacinto Melillo for Alessandro Castellani after a Greek original of about 330-300 BC sold by Alessandro Castellani to the British Museum in 1872.
Melillo was trained by Castellani and took over the Neapolitan workshop in 1870. Alessandro Castellani made a very good living from the buying and selling of antiquities alongside the jewellery business.

Gold necklace, a plaited band with pendants decorated with filigree and enamel. Made after a Greek original of about 330-300 BC sold by Alessandro Castellani to the British Museum in 1872. Formerly in the collection of Alessandro Castellani.

Object history note

Made by Giacinto Melillo (1846-1915) for Castellani, after a Greek original of 330-300 BC found at Melos and sold by Alessandro Castellani to the British Museum (no. 72.6.660). A similar necklace is in the Castellani Collection, the Villa Giulia, Rome.
