This cameo is signed by Georges Bissinger who was a gem engraver of German birth who worked in Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century. His finely carved cameos copied English and French Royal portraits and some models and techniques of carving from 16th century Italian gem engravers. His skill was demonstrated in a series of 112 gems copied from examples in the Cabinet des Médailles in Paris which he exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878.
