19th century (made)
Place of origin

Warp: cream wool; Z3S; 10 threads per inch (41 per dm).

Weft: wool (Z2S) and cotton (Z4S); colours: red, dark yellow, dark blue, dark brown, cream; a variety of light browns possibly faded from other dyes; white cotton; 60 threads per inch (276 per dm).

Side finish: returned weft

End Finish: lower end: incomplete; 1.5 cm. band of plain weave with dark yellow wool weft divided by a single band of plain stitch of red alternating with dark yellow with, below, the remains of a knotted fringe 18 cms. max. length of mostly 5 warp threads per knot. Upper: 2.5 cms. band of plain weave in white cotton, divided by a single stitch of red alternating with dark yellow ending in a plait 6.5 cms. long on the right with the suggestion of a similar ending on the left. The warp threads have been twined to produce a secure edge and may then have been whipped.

Main border: cream ground with stylised floral meander on dark brown stem. A backward-looking bird is placed in the corners.

Inner and outer border: light brown (faded) ground with flowerheads in a variety of colours separated by dark brown Xs.

NB: in the lowest 26 cms. of the borders and across the lowest border, dark blue has been used for what elsewhere is woven in dark brown.
