The complex enamelling and gilding of this vase is typical of Gallé's interest in technique, but the design - perhaps derived from Persian lacquerwork - is very different from his later and better known Art Nouveau glassware.   • Shown in the international exhibition, Paris, 1889, where Gallé was awarded a Grand Prix (Grand prize).
  • VASE 499-1889 'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900' At the Paris 1889 Exhibition Gallè’s glass display, including this vase, which was purchased from the maker, was awarded a Grand Prix. His was the most important section in the French exhibit and, with his ceramics and furniture also shown, Gallè achieved international acclaim. His technical virtuosity ranged from complex enamelling and gilding as in the piece to marvellously subtle and original colour effects within carved and etched layers of glass.(1987-2006)
