This stacking toy was produced in Denmark in the 1960's, and subsequently bought in London. It is made of wood, which has been painted and varnished, and is in eight pieces, the whole representing a stylised soldier (guardsman) in red tunic, blue trousers and black bearskin hat. It is a good example of a more traditional wooden toy, its design emphasising simplicity and durability.

Physical description

Painted and varnished wooden stacking toy in eight pieces in the form of a soldier (guardsman) in blue trousers, red tunic with white buttons painted on and a white belt, wearing a black bearskin hat; the whole supported on a black base with central dowel onto which the other pieces, which have drilled holes passing vertically through them, slide. A face has been painted onto the head section, which is unvarnished, and two arms have been attached to the chest section using metal pins.

Object history note

This toy was produced in Denmark but was bought in London by the donor's husband for their children in the mid 1960's. It was selected by the family because of its good design, which emphasises durability and learning and development. It has been played with by the donor's children and grandchildren.

Historical significance: This toy is a good example of a traditional, wooden toy, demonstrating a typical simplicity of design and durability.
