This photographic album from 1891 is one of seven volumes of photographically illustrated biographies entitled 'Men and Women of the Day: A Picture Gallery of Contemporary Portraiture'. The album chronicles the lives of literary, social and artistic figures in the last decade of the nineteenth century. Some individuals with particular relevance to the V&A collections include designer Walter Crane and the English poet and critic Coventry Patmore. The portraits in this album are good examples of Woodbury type/carbon prints.
