This piece was one of many items deposited during the New Kingdom at the mortuary temple of Deir el-Bahari, as a votive offering in the Hathor shrine within the temple complex. The turquoise colour typical of glazed composition was considered appropriate for this goddess, one of whose Epithets was 'Lady of Turquoise'.

Fragment of a votive offering, plain woven linen threaded with blue glazed composition beads, Deir el-Bahari, Egypt, New Kingdom, possibly Dynasty Eighteen
Physical description
Fragment of a votive offering , possibly a shawl, in plain woven undyed linen. Intertwined are the remains of six rows of blue glazed composition beads. There is a selvedge on one long edge, and on the other long edge a fringe made of the plaited warp ends. One of the thinner ends has another fringe of plaited straw, also with glazed composition beads threaded through. In the middle of the ground fabric, the warp is open for several centimetres.
