Brief description | Butler Clowes after Thomas Johnson; design for a rococo mirror for Thomas Johnson's 'One Hundred and Fifty New Designs'; copper plate; 1756 |
Gallery label | The plate is lettered B. Clowes sculpt. T Chippendale del. whereas the impression is lettered B. Clowes sculpt. T Johnson invt. delin. The difference is a result of the plate being altered after the exhibited impression was printed. The plate was first printed in in 1758. In the19th century John Weale inherited it along with others and reprinted them from 1833 onwards in response to the revived demand for rococo ornament. This plate appeared in 'Old English and French Ornaments' by Chipendale, Johnson, Inigo Jones, Lock and others, 1835. Weale changed Johnson's name on the plate to that of Chippendale as the latter was far better known. In fact he had none of the plates from Chippendale's 'Director'.
