This sepia photogravure shows the actress Sarah Bernhardt in the tragic role of the Duke of Reichstadt, son of Napoleon I, in Rostand's L'Aiglon (The Eaglet). Berhardt first performed this role in France in circa 1900. It was not her first performance in a male part as it followed a daring production of Hamlet in which Bernhardt performed the title role.

A full length sepia photogravure of Sarah Bernhardt dressed in a male milatary uniform consisting of tight knee breeches, a fitted jacket with upstanding collar, cummerband and sword. She is seated on a large rock her head resting on her hand.
