This simple, sharp, line caricature was drawn by the costume and set designer Guy Sheppard in 1938. It is painted in black with a white highlights at the neck to suggest a shirt collar and shows a side view of the composer and conducter Leonard Constant Lambert with his hair slicked back and eyes narrowed.

It shows Lambert during the period he spent as Musical Director of the Vic-Wells (later Royal) Ballet.
