| Gallery label | This vase was shown in the international exhibition, Paris, 1889, where Gallé was awarded a Grand Prix (Grand prize). Like many of his contemporaries, Gallé was very influenced by Japanese design. The assymetrical, informal arrangement of the thistles on this vase derives from Japanese prints. The thistle was also a symbol for the area of Lorraine, of which Nancy, Gallé's home, was the capital. It was frequently used for patriotic reasons as a symbol of defiance, most particularly during times of conflict between France and Prussia when Lorraine was at its most vulnerable. |
