This bright gouache sketch shows a scene from the 1942 production of Phèdre at the Comédie Francaise. It was once part of the private collection of Frosca (the nickname of Madame Euphrasis Munster who had a close relationship with the artist) but as an accompanying letter from the Jean Hugo makes apparent was given to Cecil Beaton in December of 1964 after Frosca's death (August 1963).

Sketch of a costume, bright gouache paint on black paper. It shows a scene from the play with a figure dressed in a long flowing dress and cloak and wearing a blue and white headress. She is standing is a room with a panelled floor which has a rich red velvet curtain draped on one side with a gold chair beneath it.
