Place of origin |
The world's first Beatles Convention was held in 1974 in Boston, Massachusetts. Organised by Joe Pope, editor of the Strawberry Fields Forever fanzine, it was named after their 1967 film, Magical Mystery Tour. It wasn't until August 1981 that Britain got its own convention in Liverpool. Fans converged on the city where local bands played music by the Beatles and of the 60s era. Originally a fourteen hour festival, the annual convention later became a week long celebration of the Beatles and of the city they came from. It continues to this day, held in the Adelphi hotel, with look-alike Beatles bands performing, rooms filled with giant screens showing film clips of The Beatles, and the main hall packed with stalls selling memorabilia such as this badge.
