This etching by the British artist Eric Atkinson (b.1928) shows one of the boxes and members of the audience during an evening of Variety at the New Cross Empire Theatre, on the corner of New Cross Road and Watson Street, in 1951.

The New Cross Empire was designed by the renowned British theatre architect Frank Matcham (1854-1920) and opened on 31 July 1899 under the management of Oswald Stoll (1866-1942), a co-founder of the Stoll-Moss theatre group. Seating 2,000, the interior was designed in Louis XIV style, with interior decoration by Messrs. Waring Ltd. The theatre was closed on 10th July 1954 and demolished in July 1958.
