A pen and ink caricature of a mermaid of which the top half is a male figure with large bulbous nose and blonde moustache and hair, The mermaid is seated on a rock engraved with the phrase 'Celtic Renascence' [sic] and is playing a small harp. The rock is positioned in the centain of a wave topped sea and against a starry sky. Handwritten annotations at the base of the sketch adds the caption "But the wise mariner puts wax into his hand".
