Place of origin

Print advertising a Grand Assault at Arms, a Boxing Competition, Wrestling and Fencing at the Sadler's Well Theatre on Saturday 24th March 1877. Printed in London by W. Hodges.

In 1802 a sparring match had taken place at a benefit night for one of the Sadler's Wells Company when Belcher (the then Champion of England) met Mendoza. In spite of the popularity of this king of entertainment it was discontinued as it might have endangered the theatre's licence. Boxing as Sadler's Wells was revived in the eighteen seventies as this handbill shows.
