Place of origin

An illustration captioned 'Scene from the new ballet of Lalla Rookh at Her Majesty's Theatre'.

The ballet was based on a poem by Thomas Moore: the heroine, Lalla Rookh, an Emperor's daughter, is betrothed to a young king who she has never met. Journeying to his palace, she falls in love with a poet. On arrival she faints, but revives to discover that the poet is the disguised king. The Asian setting gave opportunities for elaborate scenery and costumes, though the female dancers appear in Romantic ballet tutus.

Brief description

Physical description
An illustration captioned 'Scene from the new ballet of Lalla Rookh at Her Majesty's Theatre'. The image shows an extravagantly ornamented stage set, in which swathes of flowers, intricate carvings, and a series of vast pillars conjure up the impression of an Asian Palace. The impression of luxury is heightened by the fountain and moonlit landscape which are visible in the distance. Groups of dancers stand or sit on either side of the stage, turbaned men stand in the foreground on the left, with seated women in the foreground on the right. In the centre are a group of eight female dancers, seven gather around the central figure who has fainted. All eight dancers are dressed in full-skirted knee-length dresses with fitted, sleeveless bodices which contrast with the shawls and long, draped gowns of the women seated at the side of the stage.
