Place of origin |
This glass mosaic is almost certainly a trade sample, an example of the type of mosaic made by the Vitreous Mosaic Company, a London firm owned by mosaicist Jesse Rust. Mosaic flooring and mosaics ornamentation in imitation of Byzantine and Renaissance work were very widely used during the 1800s, and Rust patented a type of mosaic flooring which was very popular. This panel displays the different types of design, colour, finish, size and shape of tesserae that Rust's firm could supply.
