The figure of Love ruling the lion derives from a gem in the collection of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, probably known to Gunter from Leonardo Agostini's Le Gemme antiche figurate (Rome, 1657-69).Gunter worked as a jewellery designer and enameller in a number of European cities from the 1680s to the 1730s. He was born in England to which he returned in about 1718. |
