The Italian soprano Teresa Maddalena Allegranti (1754-1829) appeared in Venice in 1771 before performing in Germany from 1774 until 1779. She came to England in 1781 where she performed in opera at London's Haymarket Theatre, and where, according to the article Opera Salaries in Eighteenth Century London by Judith Milhous and Robert D. Home, her salary for the 1872-73 season was £800 and her Benefit 'not quite £600'.
Richard Cosway (1742-1821), the artist of the original painting after which this was engraved, was a leading portrait painter of the Regency and Georgian era, best known for his miniatures. He painted the Prince of Wales in 1780, and was appointed his Principal Painter ca.1786. He showered him with comissions until the artist fell out of favour in 1811.
