Table

ca. 1850 (made)
Place of origin

This table was made in the mid-19th century in imitation of an 18th-century form. Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries it was fashionable to collect French fine and decorative art of the 18th century. Objects with historical, royal and aristocratic associations were especially prized. The maker of this table has inlaid its top with the cipher of Marie Antoinette, presumably to associate it with the French royal family.
