This fragment of lampas silk with a design on a red silk ground shows lotus-bulb palmettes with flaming surrounds set within a framework of meandering leafy stems bearing fungi. The pattern is outlined in gold weft, composed of a strip of tanned leather, gilt on the upper side and silvered underneath.

Physical description | Fragment of lampas silk, with areas of compound weave, pattern formed by two pattern wefts, one of pale blue silk and the other of flat gilt leather strip. On a red silk ground, lotus-bulb palmettes with flaming surrounds are set within a framework of meandering leafy stems bearing fungi. The pattern is outlined in gold, with details in blue and red silk. The centres of the palmettes resemble pine cones, typical of the designs described in medieval Western sources as 'ad pineas'. |
