During the communist regime in the USSR and Eastern bloc, portraits of Vladimir Lenin were found hanging in every public building, including schools and shops. Here Lenin’s portrait is paired with a quote from one of his well-known writings. His was the most frequent image used for disseminating political propaganda across the country. The benevolent, often smiling image of Lenin was used to inscribe socialist ideology with the cult of personality.
